There are over 100 different symptoms of Celiac Disease and everybody is different. There are some people that are asymptomatic, meaning that their intestines are still being damaged but they do not feel physically ill if they get glutened. Some people have the gene for celiac disease but aren't affected by it at all (until it's triggered). Celiac disease is hereditary. No one else in my family has it but my mom has the gene. Her gene can be triggered in a week or never. Researchers believe it can come out after a traumatic event. Some people take days to recover from gluten and some take months. I was diagnosed a year and a half ago and I would say that when I get glutened my pain is a 9/10 and I have good pain tolerance. I'm saving that 10/10 for something much worse, maybe like child-birth. When I was going through my diagnosis I thought I was dying...like no joke. Some people go years being undiagnosed, but as sick as I was, I think if I went undiagnosed for another month I would have been in the hospital for a nice long vacation. I'm pretty sure practicing every day and losing weight had a big toll on my health in the long run. My symptoms include serious brain fog, extreme nausea (but I never throw up...that is my biggest fear), body aches to where I can't get out of bed, fever/flu feeling, and I will be in the bathroom 24/7 if you know what I mean. I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy, but I do wish that people would understand the pain. It's not just a stomach ache. Things that seem to help my symptoms are sitting in a hot shower, a heating pad, anti-acid medicines, and a steroid called Budesonide(will write more about this in another blog post). Of course there is no cure and I take about a month to feel like I'm turning back into myself after being glutened. Every time I get glutened I lose at least 5 pounds because it damages my villi and then I can't absorb nutrients fully and I don't want to eat a lot when I am nauseous. This is a annoying cycle because I struggle to gain weight already (metabolism) and I work very hard as an athlete to maintain a healthy body and to keep up with everyone that is blessed to not have an autoimmune disease. I don't get glutened often because I am very strict about what I eat and where I eat and I won't risk cross contamination. Anyways, my symptoms will last as long as a month but I know everyone is different:)
